Efforts to Solve Environmental Issues
NISSEI Group recognizes protecting the environment is one of their major management tasks. NISSEI considers environment protection to be the foundation of their business operation from a global perspective, promoting various measures to provide solutions. Their efforts include solving marine plastic issue, materializing a net zero society, and establishing a resource recycling system. These initiatives are overseen by the Environmental Management Project, which manages the progress of each department, aiming to provide new values to the societies and increase corporate profit and value.
Governance Structure
The President of NISSEI is responsible for approving climate change measures and target values, and the Group holds the Environmental Management Project meetings periodically. The project committees set target values, monitor the progress of each department, and supervise implementation of the measures in order to achieve the goals. The project updates are reported to the President of NISSEI.
Strategies
NISSEI Group utilizes a set of scenarios developed by a reliable external organization to identify the key risks and opportunities for their business operation posed by climate change. The Group analyzes two scenarios, the “Decarbonization Scenario (1.5-2.0°C)” and the “Decarbonization Scenario (~4.0°C),” to predict major risks (transition risks and physical risks) and opportunities by the impact. Then, measures are defined in accordance with cost benefits, and these financial impacts are evaluated.
Risk Management System
As a system to confirm the status of initiatives in each section, internal quality and environmental audits based on ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and operational audits by the Internal Audit Department are held regularly to review and evaluate the progress. The audit results are shared at the Board of Directors meetings to ensure the effectiveness of these initiatives.
Efforts to Reduce GHG (Greenhouse Gas)
As part of their efforts to reduce GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions, NISSEI is promoting the active use of renewable energy by utilizing solar panels and converting headquarters buildings into ZEBs (Zero-Energy Buildings).
Example①
NISSEI has been working on reducing GHG emissions by installing Solar Power Generation Systems on the rooftops of the Plant 7, Plant 8, and the Molding Technology Center at the headquarters in Japan. For NISSEI’s overseas factories, these systems are installed at the Thailand Plant and China-Haiyan Plant.
Locations of the Solar Power Generation Systems | Annual Power Generation Capacity |
---|---|
Headquarters (Sakaki Town, Nagano Prefecture) | 662,500kWh |
NISSEI PLASTIC MACHINERY (THAILAND) CO., LTD. | 294,400kWh |
NISSEI PLASTIC MACHINERY (HAIYAN) CO., LTD. | 1,200,000kWh |
Total | 2,156,900kWh |

Example②
ZEB (Zero-Energy Building) components, such as energy-saving equipment and monitoring system, have been installed in the R&D Center (renovated in 2016) and the QC building (newly constructed in 2019) at NISSEI headquarters. NISSEI achieved over 50% reduction in primary energy consumption: 54% reduction at the R&D Center and 57% reduction at the QC building. These buildings have received 5-star ratings from the Building Energy Efficiency and Leasing System (BELS) and are certified as “ZEB Ready” advanced buildings.
